Try this twist on a classic meal: Beef & Bean Sloppy Joes

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil

  • 12 ounces 90%-lean ground beef

  • 1 cup no-salt-added black beans, rinsed

  • 1 cup chopped onion

  • 2 teaspoons New Mexico chile powder

  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder

  • ½ teaspoon onion powder

  • Pinch of cayenne pepper

  • 1 cup no-salt-added tomato sauce

  • 3 tablespoons ketchup

  • 1 tablespoon reduced-sodium Worcestershire sauce

  • 2 teaspoons spicy brown mustard

  • 1 teaspoon light brown sugar

  • 4 whole-wheat hamburger buns, split and toaste

Directions

  1. Heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add beef and cook, breaking it up with a wooden spoon, until lightly browned but not completely cooked through, 3 to 4 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the beef to a medium bowl, reserving drippings in the pan.

  2. Add beans and onion to the pan; cook, stirring often, until the onion is softened, about 5 minutes. Add chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder and cayenne; cook, stirring constantly, until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Stir in tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire, mustard and brown sugar.
